The amendment to Kerala Police Act 2011 came into force on Sunday, empowering police to slap criminal charges on citizens by interpreting any kind of communication through any medium as defamatory, a move that led to widespread outrage in social media, among political parties, the media fraternity and even within the Left coalition. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan had given his consent to the amendment ordinance on Saturday.
